November 2015 Monthly Hero

Hi there, Everyone!

I don’t know where the time is going these days – with my husband working nights, I’m confused about whether I’m busier with the kids or if I have more time because my husband isn’t home (when he is, we’re just always together doing stuff regardless of whatever it is).

I feel like I haven’t sat down to make a card in a while and this Hero Arts’ Monthly Kit has been staring at me since November. Kathy Racoosin is an AMAZING colorist and created this kit for Hero Arts. I knew I wanted the kit but it’s daunting to try to color it and to create a card out of it. (It’s sold out by the way and they aren’t making anymore…sorry :(.)

November 2015 Monthly Hero 5

It came packaged just like this and it made my heart do a little dance. Who doesn’t love succulents? I’ve had one pot that I’ve been successful at keeping up but I should probably stop there! I don’t like how some plants attract bugs!

November 2015 Monthly Hero 4

So I sat down the other night to make this card and had NO IDEA what I wanted to do. So I didn’t make a video – I took my sweet time picking out colors (I didn’t even write down the colors I used).

November 2015 Monthly Hero 6

I did some copic coloring, I did some masking, I did some distress ink blending…and it took me a while to pull my thoughts together for this.

I wanted it to look really cohesive  and tried my best with all the colors I used – so here it is:

The kit comes with flower soft – to add green texture to your work. I added it at the bottom of this ornament piece on my card.

Pretty neat stuff!

Between my unorganized thoughts and my 6 year old, Evan, interrupting me to tell me he wants me to stamp these images so he can color too, I literally wanted to pull my hair out. Don’t get me wrong…he’s super sweet and I love that he’s crafty – but he has no patience and will keep nagging until you do what he wants.

I have been doing a little of this and that each night. If you don’t follow me on Instagram – I’m going to share a bit of it now. I also briefly shared some of this in my last video but didn’t post any pictures.

For Christmas, I got the Secret Garden coloring book and Derwent Inktense colored pencils – so I started coloring a bit each night while I worked on some brush calligraphy.

Secret Garden Coloring Page

Evan loved it so much, he insisted I print off a coloring page for him so he could do it too. Granted, printer paper isn’t the same quality, but he was happy anyway to be doing his own.

Evan Derwent

I’ve done traditional calligraphy (Old English style) since I was in 7th grade and have never branched out. Lately, I’ve been on a hype to figure out brush calligraphy – so I’m following Pieces Calligraphy and doing a Handlettered ABCs challenge on Instagram.

Basic Brush Strokes

For the challenge, everyone works on a letter each day. So I would do a letter…and color some in the Secret Garden coloring book. Here’s a sample of one I posted on Instagram:

Brush Calligraphy Practice L and M

The challenge is more than half way over (some followers are probably glad about that!) 😉

In addition to these daily upkeeps, I also made a card for a ex-coworker of mine who recently lost her home in a fire (40+ years of memories gone). Please pray for her if you have a moment or think of it later.

Floral Wings

This stamp set is called Floral Wings and is a Hostess Set through Stampin’ Up! and I’ve never used it before. The sentiment is from a stamp/die set called Prayers by Hero Arts in collaboration with Simon Says Stamp. I added a strip of washi tape at the bottom of the card to tie it all together. A very simple card and it was all I really had time for.

Thanks for keeping up with me on this post! It’s very busy, I know! But I still feel like I’ve been slacking lately on crafting…WHY?

  1. Oh, sweet Caly, what a fun and delightful post today! Wow! I so love this new Hero Arts Monthly Kit, and what a beautiful card with fabulous coloring!! And I’ve seen the Secret Garden coloring book, and you’ve done a beautiful job using your new pencils. What a beautiful card using the SU set with the HA/SSS set that I so love and was thrilled they finally restocked (I got it). I love how you’ve combined them all for a gorgeous card. I am so sorry to hear about your former co-worker’s house being lost to fire. I can’t imagine how devastating and will continue to pray for that person. I know this card will be loved, along with your precious words. Thanks for putting a smile on my face with all the delights today!! (And, yes, I love Kathy Racoosin.) Praying for you and your family too as you struggle with not seeing much of your DH, having to work, and having your precious boys. I loved seeing how you made a copy of your coloring book so your 6-year-old could color…good mommy! Hugs and prayers, sweet friend!

  2. Oh, I forget to say that I love your lettering and having a Pinterest board with some things I’ve collected. I so would love to try my hand at it (one day – hehe!). You are truly gifted in it! Hugs!

  3. Caly, So glad to see your post. I thought about you yesterday and sent out a prayer about your glucose test. I really like this card. The stamp kit sure has a lot of great stamps! I have some Flower Soft and forget to use it. It gives such a nice effect.
I have been following your Instagram and saw your coloring – such a beautiful job! I started coloring about ten years ago, during the time I was caring for my mom. Got away from it for a while, but I have recently bought a couple new books. It sure is relaxing
I read about your former co-worker who lost their home and everything, and said a prayer. I thought about asking for their address so I could send a card. It is up to you whether you think this would be a good idea.
I hope you are starting to have a little bit more energy.
    Enjoyed your post!
