DAY 3 of 3: Innovation Master
I’m no innovation master, but I do LOVE interactive cards!
This was the card I was most excited to make – but also the one I was most nervous about. I had so many ideas in my head, but making it all come together requires a lot of discipline. I had to talk myself out of getting too wild… “Settle down, Caly…” “No…don’t even think about it…” 😛
When I narrowed the ideas down to execute this card – I took my sweet time. I colored MANY images and only used what I thought would fit. To construct the box, you’ll need a 12×12 piece of card stock. Score it at 4 inches on all sides, then cut the score marks, stopping at the center square. This box is a 4 x 4 inch box closed, so if you want a 3 x 3 box, start with a 9 x 9 piece of cardstock and score at 3 inches. The lid works the same, except you’ll want to factor in a 1″ lip and 1/4″ flap for gluing to keep the sides down.
HERE IS THE FINAL PROJECT:
The focal point of this card is the paper cake. I cut strips of 1 1/2″ paper, applied some color using Spun Sugar distress ink and snipped them from one end to the other in fringe style so that I can wrap them to the curvature of a circle to form the tops of each layer of the cake. I added a scallop border at the top of each layer colored with Cracked Pistachio distress ink. Once the cake was done, I die-cut the Cheers word die and adhered two layers of white cardstock to make it strong. I glued two strips of acetate to it and cut two little slits on the top of the cake to hold it up like a cake topper. I really love how it turned out!
Initially, I envisioned a cake with critters and animals all over it. When I put the cake together and attached it to the center of the card – I realized the cake is no where big enough to make this vision come to life – so I settled with making triangular stands for the gift boxes, bear and hippo so they are able to stand with support.
Lets get into the details of each flap, shall we?
Flap 1: Magic Slider
I should’ve taken this shot straight on – I promise it is aligned perfectly! What’s better than interactive cards? Mini-versions, of course! This was so fun and easy to do. Makes me giddy!
Flap 2: Waterfall Fold
This one was tricky! I wanted to fit all the elephants on this 4″ x 4″ space without overcrowding it and those ears made positioning difficult but I think it turned out ok. 🙂
Flap 3: Shaker
These tigers are fiercely cute, right?! I wanted to make a square shaker but didn’t have a square frame – so I settled for this rectangle frame, but I really love it! It’s more of an accent and doesn’t take away from the rest of the card.
Flap 4: Peek-a-boo Windows
I’ve never done these peek-a-boo windows before and thought this would be a great opportunity to try them out. I colored the pieces using the same distress inks mentioned above for some interest (Spun Sugar and Cracked Pistachio). I stamped different short sentiments on the doors to fill the dead space and sequins to act as knobs.
I added little party hats throughout to tie the different flaps together and to make it more cohesive. How about that gingham patterned paper, though? I need a few more of those packs on hand!
Here it is one more time so you don’t have to scroll up:
EEPPP!!! The photos just don’t do this card justice. I really hope you like this card! I’m so excited about it and I honestly don’t think I could ever make a card that could top this – it’s 5 cards in one! Good luck to everyone who entered this contest – you are all amazing and talented and I’m so blessed to be a part of this community!
Thanks so much for stopping by!
XOXO,
