Layton’s Legacy – Forever In Our Hearts

Hi, Friends!

I’m honored to be a part of Layton’s Legacy again this year. Layton Lawson, son of Lea Lawson, lived his entire life in a NICU before passing away. Lea endured the hardships first hand being a parent in the NICU and has started a fundraiser and card drive each year to help NICU families know that their not alone by allocating funds raised to help make purchases and donating to charities that help NICU families. This year, Pinkfresh Studio helped create a stamp set that we’re all using today. For every sale, Pinkfresh Studio will donate $5 towards the Layton’s Legacy fundraiser.

The Forever In Our Hearts stamp set focuses on a beautiful single butterfly image. For today, I made a neutral card and used my colored butterfly to create a simple belly band. I embossed my butterfly in gold and colored with Copic markers.

Copic colors used: BV02, BV04, BV08, V01, V12, V15, RV00, RV02, RV04, BG10, BG11, BG13, E31, E35.

To make my card, I started with a 5.5″ x 8″ card. I scored at 2 1/8″, rotated the cardstock 180 degreeds and scored again at 2 1/8″. Once you burnish those folds, you have a plain gate-fold card. To decorate the outside of the gates when closed, I die-cut the Fancy Floral 2 die from light gray cardstock. Then using a paper trimmer, I cut it right down the middle, switched the sides, and adhered it to the gates.

For my belly band, I cut a strip of vellum the length of 8″x 1″ and wrapped it loosely around my card before adding double sided tape and adhering it together, making sure it’s not too snug and can slide freely on and off the card.

The inside of the card is simply stamped with a sentiment from the stamp set. I felt this card reflected the peace and hope I was trying emulate and hope that you feel the same.

WAYS PEOPLE CAN HELP:

-DONATE – directly to Layton’s Legacy GoFundMe Fundraising Link.

-SHARE – not everyone is able to financially donate, but sharing on your social media outlets is welcomed & helpful-CREATE – this year’s card drive theme is “Sensitive Sympathy” geared towards parents who have lost a pregnancy due to miscarriage or stillbirth, infant or child. They can get all the card drive info HERE. (It will also be linked in my main post.)

Lea’s Story:

In honor of remembrance of my son, Layton Caleb, we are raising money to purchase a $50 Starbucks gift card for all 50 beds in the level 4 NICU at the U of M Masonic Children’s Hospital in Minneapolis, MN.

Fundraising will run from October 15th – November 10th. Shortly after we will purchase the gift cards, and bring them to a social worker at the hospital the week of November 17th. This is the anniversary of the date we lost Layton, and I can think of no better way to honor his memory than to give a small comfort to parents who find themselves thrust into NICU life.

If we raise in excess of the amount needed to purchase the gift cards, the remaining balance will be donated to the Upper Midwest Ronald McDonald house in Layton’s name.

I was in the NICU with Layton for 5 months and 7 days, and I remember the day a social worker handed me a card with a $20 Starbucks card in it. I broke. It’s really hard being a parent to a very sick baby in the NICU, and it’s really nice when you are reminded that so many people out there understand that.

I also really want to be able to help keep the memory of Layton alive, and be able to share his story. I am so grateful for any donation, no matter the size, as it allows me to tell people about that amazing little boy who fought for every single moment of his life. Thank you SO much for your donation – I appreciate it more than words can explain.

Thank you so much for stopping by and I hope you’ll consider contributing to Layton’s Legacy!

  1. A beautiful card for such a worth cause. My niece was in NICU for over 9 months so I understand how stressful it can be. The soft colors of your butterfly are perfect for someone whose lost a little one. Thank you for sharing.

  2. OMG! I am swooning over the gorgeous way you colored that beautiful butterfly! I can’t wait for my stamp set to arrive, I only hope I can make a card half as beautiful as yours! Thank you for helping Lea with her mission to help the parents going through this! This is a wonderful cause!
