Hello friends!
Today’s post is non-card related. I like to sew small projects sometimes and thought it would be fun to share some easy zipper pouches using Tim Holtz fabric. Did you know that Tim Holtz had fabric bundles you could buy from Simon Says Stamp? I used two bundles to create my projects for today’s post, the Eclectic Elements Memoranda Fabric Bundle and the Eclectic Elements Alchemy Fabric Bundle.

The Eclectic Elements Alchemy Fabric Bundle reminds me of Distress alcohol ink and the Eclectic Elements Memoranda Fabric Bundle reminds me of Tim’s stencils and mixed media tags. I used one bundle for the outside of the zipper pouches and one bundle for the lining of the zipper pouches. These fabric bundles are pre-cut to 10″ x 10″ pieces and are pre-washed and ready to use!

I didn’t take photos before cutting and piecing together, but I hope I can provide enough information that you can sew them without any issues. Before I start with my instructions, here’s a great visual/video that I used to create my pouches today: https://www.instagram.com/p/CsLOMoLpkRI/.

I cut all of the Alchemy fabric pieces into 2″ stripes. With each color of the 10″ x 10″ strips, you end up with 5 strips of each color. Don’t worry, there’s plenty of extra fabric to get you 5 strips of each color. Then I sewed two pieces together to get a long strip of each color (all but the black). You’ll have 1 un-sewn short strip of each color remaining for a pencil pouch. Set the black stripes aside for later
Next, you’ll want to sew two pieces of the Memoranda fabric together to create liners for your pouches. You’ll make two of these for the bags. You’ll need one unsewn piece for the pencil pouch.
As you can see above, I sewed each long strip together in rainbow order to get two large zipper pouches and all the shorter stripes together to get one pencil pouch. On the left, I show an unquilted panel. The piece on the right is quilted with straight lines 1/4″ from each seamline to sew the top, batting, and liner pieces together.

Now square off your panels – trimming off the excess so you can get as perfect of rectangles as you can for your bags and pencil pouch. After sewing/quilting all three projects, you’ll add 2″ stripes of the black color to the top and bottoms of the panels to bind and finish off the edges. It’s going to be really helpful to watch the video for this. Then, you’ll sew the zippers onto the black Alchemy fabric to form the tops of the bags.

Why are my bags different sizes (in height, anyway)? Because the folds on the sides that I created are different in height. The bag on the left is folded up 1 3/4″ and the bag on the right is folded up 2 1/4″. Again, reviewing the video I linked above is helpful to know what I’m talking about. Since the remaining fabric piece is shorter, I made a flat pencil pouch instead – you could get 5 pencil pouches if you don’t want to make the larger pouches.

The raw edges on the insides of the bags use 2″ strips of Memoranda fabric. They are bound/sewn onto the raw edges much like we did with the black Alchemy fabric used for the tops of the bags. I really enjoyed making the bags this way because I didn’t have to fuss with a loose lining like for other bags I’ve made.

I hope you like them! I was inspired to make these after seeing some friends make them at a crafty gathering they had. I had rainbow fabric and thought it was a great way to use this fabric! I ended up using all of the Alchemy fabric and have 3-4 pieces of the Memoranda fabric left over for future projects.
I hope you enjoyed this card! Thanks so much for stopping by today!

I wonder if there is anything you’re not superb at, Caly. These are striking and gorgeous! TFS … I had no idea that Tim Holtz made fabric, much less that it was available at SSS.
