It’s been a LONG time since I stitched on a card. 3 years! I was looking back at previous posts and I’ve only made 2 projects using stitched backgrounds. I made a template for a rose – if you’re interested, check out THIS post. Today’s card is quite different – the lattice-style background was much easier and less of a commitment for me. It still took some time, but not quite as long as it would to cross-stitch each square.

I saw this background on Instagram, posted by Teri Spracklin had had to recreate it! I chosen the floss – 18 colors – and organized it to travel with, but didn’t get to use it and it’s been sitting in a bin. I don’t know what made me think of it last night, but I decided to start it and I couldn’t stop.

I used DMC embroidery floss – 6 ply. I separated the strands and only used 3 strands. This really doesn’t take much thread at all to complete. I started at the top and worked my way down in rainbow order. To stay organized, I labeled my floss with numbers on their bobbins so I wouldn’t work out of order. It’s temporary so you can remove it when you’re done with this project.

I’m not sure what this stitch is called, but I’m calling it a lattice stitch! Each color takes up three rows. I stitched diagonally, skipping the center hole between the 3 rows all across the panel, the back towards the left where I began to tie a knot on the back to tie off each color. I repeated this until I finished and the rows naturally interlock and overlap.

For my sentiment, I cut a small circle with vellum, then die-cut the Small Love You with black cardstock 3 times to layer for dimension. I finished by adding a few Iridescent Clear Crystals. The background is already so busy and colorful, I wanted something simple for the sentiment.
